Restaurants in Windhoek & Central Namibia
Windhoek has food and cuisine to satisfy every palate. The restaurants and cafés here dish up a wide selection of fare, although you'll find it easier to find European cuisine than local African delicacies. There are also plenty of fast-food places serving pies, burgers and pizzas, particularly from food courts in central shopping malls. Many places are closed on Sundays, so check beforehand.
The restaurants in Windhoek serve everything from the finest French cuisine to Chinese food. It also has a strong German influence and so German cuisine is quite popular.

NICE
Definitely the most stylish dining experience in Windhoek - the renovations of this old residential building have been lovingly implemented with comfortable, modern furnishings blending harmoniously with the more traditional architecture.
There is a good selection of modern, Namibian food and an interesting wine list - nothing ground breaking but definitely worth a visit especially if you want to add a bit of glamour to your evening out. Also on the property is a bar area and a separately run sushi restaurant.
The "Namibian Institute for Culinary Education" has been set up as a chef finishing school. However, this aspect of the business is not greatly in evidence although the large, glass-fronted kitchen was designed to be the visible heart of the building and be able to support the necessary number of students participating in the project. Future plans for NICE, once the restaurant is running smoothly, are to include a "rent-a-chef" home service as well as cooking classes for the public.
On week days NICE is open for lunch from 12-2. Dinner is available 7 days a week.

Joe's Beer House
A real Windhoek institution and definitely worth a visit if you want to try a variety of game meat. Having moved and expanded 3 times, it is now situated close to the Eros shopping complex off Nelson Mandela. The original owner and namesake of the business sold up a few years ago but without a noticeable change in the overall ambience. It has a very casual, pub-like atmosphere with most of the seating being either outside or under an open-air thatched structure. For winter nights it is definitely worth finding one of the few inside tables or wrapping up warmly. Great for larger groups and meat eaters.

Taal
Opened in 2004, this was the first restaurant in Windhoek to provide good Indian food. It is the brainchild of two families of Indian descent who decided to finally satisfy the demand for their culinary heritage. The Morars have lived in Namibia for over 30 years and the Alexanders moved to Namibia some 17 years ago from India.
The Taal offers authentic Indian food from many different regions. Due to the fact that many local Namibians are unused to strong spices, all dishes are prepared according to the clients taste, varying from mild to "Indian" hot.
Situated at the northern end of Independence Avenue, close to Luther Street, the restaurant is a little out of the town centre and at night it is advisable to drive there.
They are open Monday to Saturday for both lunch and dinner. Lunches are between 12.00-14.30 and dinners 17.30-22.00.

The Gourmet Restaurant and Beergarden
Tucked away in a secluded courtyard off from the main pedestrian street in Windhoek, this is a great option if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of town. For lunches or warm summer evenings, the outside seating amongst tall palm trees is ideal. Whereas, for cold winter evenings there is a spacious inside area with a fireplace.
The menu is extensive and most people will find something to their taste. They offer breakfast from early morning until midday and then the lunch / dinner menu is available, with the kitchen finally closing at 22.00. Not open on Sundays.

Luigi and the Fish
Situated in Klein Windhoek on the main road to the airport, Luigi's is a good option if you have a number of different tastes to cater for, as their extensive menu should satisfy most. The main entrance from Sam Nujoma Drive is a large trunk archway , the only opening onto this busy street, and from here you step into a hidden courtyard. Mosaic trees and embossed designs adorn much of the outside area creating a funky and fun vibe, whereas the interior rooms are decorated in a more subdued and sophisticated manner. There is also a bar upstairs and wooden deck that is great for sundowner drinks.
This is one of the few restaurants in Windhoek that is open 7 days a week. It opens for lunch between 12.00-15.00 and dinner from 18.00-22.00. The bar stays open till about midnight.
There is parking at the back of the property (Joseph Wood St), which normally has an unofficial car guard in attendance.

Gathemann
Set on the first story of one of Windhoek's historic buildings, Gathemann's is also one of the city's longest standing restaurants. The chef, Urs Gamma, is the driving force behind this establishment and produces elegant food with a distinct Namibian twist, incorporating many local delicacies such as Kalahari truffles, Luderitz oysters, Omajova mushrooms and Swakop aspargus.
The balcony, overlooking Independence Avenue and Zoo Park, is the perfect place to have lunch and watch life go by. The interior space is intimate but more formal. Service is not always their strong point.
The kitchen closes at 22.00. Closed on Sundays.
