Every year during the last week of August the Herero people gather for a pilgrimage to the graves of their ancestors, many who died fighting in the 1904 rebellion against the Germans. The graves of three great chiefs of the Herero - Tjamuuha (died 1859), Maharero (died 1890), and Samuel Maharero (died 1923) - are visited.
