Dr. Frans Indongo, who owns the lodge, is one of the few black Namibians who managed to become a successful businessman during the apartheid era. Having grown up in Owamboland, the lodge has taken inspiration from a typical homestead of that region with palisades of twisted stakes, the use of natural stone, wood and reeding as well as a variety of locally-made earthen pots and large, woven storage baskets.
The lodge is set in the heart of a 17,000 hectare farm in bush savannah, which boasts an abundance of game including the white and black rhino, black wildebeest, zebra, kudu, gemsbok, eland, nyala, white blesbok, sable, roan antelope, springbok, camels and hartebeest.
The rooms are simply but tastefully decorated with lime-washed furniture and matching linen, and have a clean and airy feel. The eight chalets are generously proportioned and all the rooms have their own bathroom, air-conditioner, fridge, hairdryer, telephone, TV and tea / coffee trays.
There is a cosy breakfast room, an open-air restaurant, bar and lounge area as well as a lovely pool and raised deck that overlooks the veldt and the nearby waterhole, which is flood-lit at night.
Those who like to go exploring on foot, have a selection of three different routes. The effort of climbing the hilltop is rewarded with wonderful panoramic views of the vast bush savannah plains right across to the Waterberg mountain. Furthermore, there is much to learn about the trees on the wayside. A botanist has numbered many typical trees and shrubs according to the ‘Pocket List of Southern African Indigenous Trees'.
The hosts at Frans Indongo, Astrid and Alf, are extremely attentive and have done everything in their power to ensure that the lodge is comfortable and well run.
